Finding a good mechanic that is trustworthy and experienced can be difficult. Many riders have to visit the mechanic for basic and minor repairs and maintance and most of them would agree that the rates most mechanics charge is too high. It costs around $75 an hour for most mechanics and many of them will charge someone just to diagnose a problem. I am not a big fan of paying someone to tell me that there is something wrong with my bike. I already knew there was something wrong with it when I decided to take it to the shop in the first place. Although I have found a handful of motorcycle shops out there that are honest and willing to work with customers to gain future business. I experienced this with both Bikers Bay in north Phoenix and Cyclewerks of Tempe. Both places evaluated my bike problems for free and worked with me on payment. My suggestion is that if you have a problem with your bike and you need a mechanic, you don’t just drop it off and say fix it. Visit several shops and mechanics to see who will treat you with respect and give you an honest opinion. You will find that some will be better at servicing your needs that you might expect. In the motorcycle world there are certain names people should know. One of the first riders I ever recognized was Evel Knievel. He was the most famous stunter of my youth and he was an inspiration. Today there are new riders who people should recognize. They don’t all have cool names but, they do have amazing reputaions. People like Jason Britton should be remembered for their groundbreaking routines and impossible tricks. Jason was the first black male to ever earn a sponsorship from Icon and his own television show on the Speed network called Superbikes. Local to Arizona are two amazing riders that actually work together at practice to compete against eachother in XDL (Extreme Drama League). Bill Dixon and Andrew Griffy are two of the best in the business and they are impressive to watch. Just like any sport that is new and extreme, the names of many of the tricks are foreign to most people. I am going to break down some of the motorcycle jargon so those of you who are new to stunting can understand the tricks a little better.

First and foremost is the wheelie. Everyone knows what a wheelie is but many people do not know what a high chair or a 50/50 is. Both are versions of wheelies.
A high chair is when a person has both legs over the handlebars and they do a wheelie.
A 50/50 is when they only have one leg over the handlebars and the other is hanging halfway off the other side. this is actually a much harder trick than a high chair because the rider is less balanced on the bike.
Of course people also do wheelies on the front wheels of bikes as well. This is called a stoppie. And of course there are also high chair stoppies and other variations of this trick.
One trick that doesn’t involve the rider being on the bike is a burnout. Often riders are on the bike but the bike is not moving because they hold the front brake.
There are standing burnouts which is when the rider is stays standing on the bike with no feet on the ground.
And last but not least, there is a trick called a chainsaw. This is when the rider holds the throttle wide open letting the bike do a burnout on it’s side and allowing the power to make the bike go in circles around the standing rider.

Men aren’t the only ones stunting anymore.

In the past, motorcycle enthusist were typically all men. It was men who started the Dirty Dozen and the Hell’s Angels. And obvisously a man was the first to start doing tricks on motorcycles. Well today stunting is a competitive sport that both men and women are involved in. Riders like Leah Peterson and Chesca Miles are giving the sport a whole new light and they are the shining stars of it. Chesca Miles is from Europe and not only rides but also models and is an actress as well. She has worked hard to achieve respect and if you meet her at the stunt spot don’t be surprised if she does circles around you litterally.

My first motorcycle was a 50cc scooter that only had one gear and a rear drum brake that barely worked. I loved it more than my first teddy bear and more than my first girlfriend. That bike got me hooked to having wind in my face and the thrill of twisting the throttle. I remember when I broke the chain I took the engine apart, cleaned it, and put it back together. When I was finished it was better than it was when I broke it. I was 8 years old and I will never forget how much fun that bike brought me. I know that the bike I had then made me the man I am today. That was 20 years ago and I am still a huge fan of motorcycles. I started an online motorcycle magazine called www.stuntworldmagazine.com and I live to see bikes, ride them, and evaluate them.
